With the whole “Bong Ban” thing, I’ve read the bill and it’s EXACTLY the same as the Federal bill. Companies are not allowed to sell items that are knowingly intended to be used…

It is brave and honest and oh-so-very-very-smart. Here’s a sampling from the section in which he grapples with the latest Internet controversy over a comedian’s rape joke:

In this past week of re-reading the blogs, going through the comment threads, and re-scrolling the Twitter arguments, I haven’t once found a single statement, feminist or otherwise, saying that rape shouldn’t be joked under any circumstance, regardless of context. Not one example of this.

In fact, every viewpoint I’ve read on this, especially from feminists, is simply asking to kick upward, to think twice about who is the target of the punchline, and make sure it isn’t the victim.

So it’s more than a little disheartening that the only way to get men to think critically about rape-related humor is by having a man say this stuff, but at least it’s one of my favorite men?

ETA: By which I mean men as a class, not individual men, yadda yadda yadda…

New Video Game Trailers Featuring Women at E3 2013

Yesterday I tweeted about how exactly zero of the next generation games presented at Microsoft’s Xbox One E3 event featured female protagonists. A bunch of gamer dudes on Twitter decided that they did not, shall we say, appreciate my pointing that out. But Microsoft’s Xbox One event was not the only press conference that took place at the E3 Expo yesterday, both Electronic Arts and Sony featured slightly more women in their line up of new trailers. Below are a few that caught my eye!

I was also excited to see that the Super Mario 3D World Trailer shown at the Nintendo Wii U event has Princess Peach as a playable option for the first time in 25 years. The last time she was playable in the core Super Mario Bros series of platformers was Super Mario Bros. 2 released in 1988 for the NES.

There were also a few other titles featured at E3 which don’t necessarily have women in the leading role but looked really intriguing including The Order: 1866, Witness, Rain, Below and of course Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare!
